Sexual assault awareness takes the campus spotlight this month

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and °ÅÀÖÊÓƵ has joined the national effort to bring attention to this subject. Upcoming activities:

  • Womyn of Color Conference — April 20-22. The UC-wide Womyn of Color Conference focuses on how colonization has affected women of different ethnicities. See page 8 and wrrc.ucdavis.edu for more information.
  • Silent Survivor Project — 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 23, 25 and 27. Placed on the front of each silhouette in the East Quad is a true story of a woman's sexual assault experience.
  • Women's self-defense workshop — 7 p.m. April 24. A two-hour introductory workshop in the ARC will offer self-defense techniques designed for women of all ages, body types and physical abilities.
  • Denim Day California — April 25. Wear a pair of jeans this day. Denim Day California is a symbolic response to a court decision to overturn a rape conviction because the victim was wearing jeans.
  • Covering Race and Gender: the Myth of Journalistic Neutrality — 4:10 p.m. April 25. Robert Jensen, associate professor, University of Texas at Austin, talks about journalism, gender and racial stereotypes. Mee Room, Memorial Union.
  • Is Masculinity a Bad Deal for Men? — Noon, April 26. A brown bag discussion with Robert Jensen on this topic will be held in North Hall's Room 105.
  • The Death of Empathy: How Privilege Robs Us From Caring — 6 p.m. April 26. Robert Jensen examines privilege, empathy and solidarity. Memorial Union.
  • Women's self-defense course — 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 28. This rape aggression defense class teaches strategies to increase awareness and reduce risk.
  • Women Take Back the Night — 6:10 p.m. May 8. Meet in the East Quad and join in protesting violence against women at the 26th annual °ÅÀÖÊÓƵ Women Take Back the Night.
