Last week we told you about the Sacramento campus’s summer concert: It’s this Thursday night (Aug. 7), 5:30 to 7:30; it’s a family event, complete with Kids Zone; and it’s free.
Now, Staff Assembly is offering a great deal on another concert: the with headline acts Beck and The National, Saturday-Sunday, Aug. 23-24, at the .
How great of a deal? Two-day passes for $1 each, to cover ticket handling and distribution by Ƶ Conference and Event Services.
The passes are valued at $160 each; the promoter has given 1,000 of them to Staff Assembly.
All Ƶ staff members — Davis campus, health system and remote locations — are eligible to reserve up to four passes each. The passes are being made available on a first-come, first-served basis via Conference and Event Services’ online reservation system, starting at noon this Thursday (Aug. 7).
The ticket portal will be shut down when all tickets have been reserved, or at 10 a.m., Monday, Aug. 18. All tickets must be picked up from the Conference and Events Services office, , across from Voorhies Hall. Ticket distribution is scheduled the week of Aug. 18, according to the following schedule: 1- 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18; and 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, Aug. 19-22.
SACRAMENTO CONCERT: This annual event is presented this year by Ƶ Children’s Hospital and co-hosted by the Ƶ Health System Community Advisory Board and Shriners Hospitals for Children-Northern California.
“The outdoor concert celebrates Ƶ’ relationships with adjacent neighborhoods and thanks local residents, as well as the broader community, for their support and engagement,” a news release states. “The event also is an opportunity to say thank you to faculty members, students and employees across the university whose exceptional work has helped make Ƶ a world leader in education, research and clinical care.”
The event takes place on the lawn next to the Shriners hospital, 45th and X streets. People are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs, then get comfortable as Sacramento dance band Hip Service plays Motown, classic rock and disco, and today’s “funky groove.”
The program also includes a Sacramento Republic Football Club player visit — that's the professional soccer team that has Ƶ Children's Hospital as “season presenting partner” and official medical provider.
The Kids Zone will feature games, crafts, bounce houses and clowns. And, if your children are not bouncing up and down already, the Radio Disney Road Crew will get them moving in a show before the concert.
Free bike helmets, courtesy of Kohl’s Cares, will be given to the first 100 children to visit the Trauma Prevention and Outreach booth. Staff members in support of the Kohl's Buckle Up to Grow Up program will offer free helmet fittings and share tips on keeping children safe and healthy year-round.
The event also will include a diaper and wipe drive — new packages of either can be dropped at the Ƶ Children’s Hospital booth.
You’re welcome to bring your own food, or visit the Sacramento campus’s weekly farmers market which is held every Thursday evening. No alcoholic beverages, no smoking.
MASSAGE THERAPY UPDATE: We’ve learned since last week’s Summer Diversions column that staff members are eligible to receive a 10 percent discount on the Davis campus’s massage service. Simply show your Staff Pin at the time of your massage!

Massage is offered year-round by Student Health and Counseling Services, for staff and faculty as well as students. Massages cost $30 (or $27 with Staff Pin) for a 30-minute session and $40 (or $36 with Staff Pin) for a 45-minute session, payable by cash or check. Gift certificates are available.

HANDS-ON SCIENCE AT LAKE TAHOE: The 15th annual Children’s Environmental Science Day is scheduled for this Saturday (Aug. 9) at the , which includes Ƶ’ .
Admission is free and open to the public.
Local organizations will present more than 30 hands-on science activities aimed at creating an awareness of Lake Tahoe’s unique ecology. The activities are designed for ages 6 and up — but, really, the activities are for the whole family to enjoy.
Here are some examples: Get up close and personal with fish and microscopic zooplankton from Lake Tahoe, learn about native species in the Tahoe Basin, and test the water quality of a stream.
The event is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. The organizers said free ice cream will be served from 2 to 4 p.m.
The Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences is on the campus of Sierra Nevada College, 291 Country Club Drive, Incline Village, NV, just off Highway 28.
