What It Means to Be a Hispanic Serving Institution

Being a Hispanic/Latinx-identifying student at one of the largest UCs has opened my eyes to the limitations we as a community face. ��Ƶ being on the map as a federally recognized Hispanic Serving Institution means more diversity on our campus and support for students where their concerns are heard. ��Ƶ becoming an HSI would help create a bridge to close the gap between low-income people of color and higher education.

As a first-gen student of color, finding my sense of belonging has been my biggest struggle. Up until college, I had yearned for this feeling of acceptance my whole life. Growing up in a highly critical community for so long, I never expressed my true self due to the fear of being ridiculed by others. I spent a majority of my life trying to prove my worth. In doing so, I pursued higher education as a way to escape the pressures and expectations of growing up in a low-income community.

Association Offers Ladders of Opportunity to Hispanic Students

A series of five deaths in her extended family had devastated Jasmine Diaz, and the neurobiology, physiology and behavior major was on academic probation through 2022. She had given up her dream to become a doctor or even to continue in science.

Today, the fifth-year student is thrilled to be working in the cancer lab of Professor Luis Carvajal-Carmona, is recommitted to a career in science, and has a passion to help underrepresented and first-generation students.

��Ƶ’ Hispanic-Serving Institution Community Council, an undergraduate student and a Ph.D. candidate are among the recipients of Social Justice Awards from the university’s 12th annual Equity Summit, held May 30.

The Equity Summit is organized by the ��Ƶ-sponsored Sacramento Area Youth Speaks, or SAYS, and sponsored by Undergraduate Admissions; the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; and the School of Education.

‘Face to Face’ With HSI Director Lina Mendez

Lina Mendez’s career has always been one of intention (“I want to work with Chicano/Latino students. ... I want to make a difference in the lives of young people”), a trait that serves her well as she leads ��Ƶ’ efforts to become a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution, or HSI.

Because, as she explained on the latest edition of Face to Face With Chancellor May, while other institutions have waited until receiving their first grants before appointing HSI directors, ��Ƶ did it the other way around.
