Unitrans gave all of us a lift Friday (March 4) — and we’re not just talking about the free rides all day throughout the campus-city bus system.

After being sidelined for nearly two years because of the coronavirus pandemic, Unitrans’ vintage double-deckers from London — iconic symbols of ��Ƶ — are going back to work.

You can ride them on a free lunchtime shuttle service between the Memorial Union Terminal and downtown from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Friday (March 4) in celebration of the campus-city transit system’s 54th birthday.

The Red Buses That Could — and Did

Unitrans celebrated its 50th birthday last Friday (March 2) without any of the system’s iconic double-deckers or any other bus in sight, after rainy weather forced a moved inside.

But that didn’t dampen the spirits of the 150 or so people who had gathered in the alternate location, the Memorial Union’s east wing lounge. Outside, Unitrans buses kept right on working — just as they have since the Associated Students of ��Ƶ launched the “University Transport System” on Feb. 28, 1968.

Unitrans: A Legacy of the Turbulent ’60s

Transit wasn’t the only theme of Unitrans’ 50th anniversary celebration last week.

Among the speakers was Bob Black, who, during his successful campaign for ASUCD president in 1966, promised to establish a university bus system. But, in addressing more than 150 people at the Unitrans party in the Memorial Union on Friday (March 2), he noted that his proposal amounted to only a few sentences in his campaign brochure. “I was running as an antiwar candidate,” he said. “I was not running as a Unitrans candidate. ... And I was not expected to win.”

Unitrans turns 50 this week! And what a ride it’s been for this student-initiated and still mostly student-run transit system: It started with a pair of used double-deckers from London operating on two routes catering to students primarily, and now has 49 buses on 18 routes covering the city and carrying more than 4 million passengers a year.

The ��Ƶ women's basketball team’s post-season run ended Thursday (March 23) with a loss in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament Round of 16 against Washington State, but they were still welcomed home to Davis in style.
