Recalling Rep. Lewis’ Visit to King Hall

It was an incredible scene: Civil rights icon John Lewis, congressman from Georgia, visiting the life-size statue of his mentor, Martin Luther King Jr., at the ��Ƶ School of Law in 2016.

The terra cotta sculpture, showing King in a robe carved with scenes from his life and associated figures and events from the civil rights movement, stands in the law school’s lobby.

Dean Kevin Johnson had the honor of escorting Rep. Lewis to see the statue. Lewis had come to ��Ƶ to deliver the keynote address at the law school commencement.

Chancellor May Pays Tribute to Rosa Parks

Chancellor Gary S. May hopped on a 1950s-era Sacramento city bus and took a seat with Rosa Parks, in spirit, Tuesday (Feb. 4), the 107th anniversary of her birth.

In 1955, on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, Parks famously refused to give up her seat to a white passenger, sparking a yearlong bus boycott by the African American community — the first major action of the civil rights movement.

2 Public Programs on Memorials, History, Values

In a pair of public programs this week and next, ��Ƶ faculty and visiting faculty will discuss the effect of Civil War statues and civil rights memorials on public policy, community relations and history. This week’s program will take place in Sacramento, the other will be on campus — both are at night and both are free.
